An interview with Khun Thana Likitkunawong
Related experience: acted as a host family with another homestay provider
Message to students:
We are a professional Australian/Thai family of four, including two young adults, and have been living in Melbourne since late 2002. We are experienced host and guardians and having lived and studied overseas ourselves, we understand the concerns of students and parents alike.
About Thana and her family
Thana graduated in Education from Chulalongkorn University in Thailand and also holds an MBA from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), Australia. Her husband, Charahts, is a senior executive at CPALL (licensed to operate 7-Eleven in Thailand) and has been in the retail industry for over 30 years. He is an economist by qualification from Kasetsart University in Thailand and has a Master of Commerce from the University of New South Wales, Australia. Their two children Saran (20) and Chanya (16) were born in Thailand but have grown up in Australia with English as their first language. Saran is a commerce student majoring in Accounting and Finance at Melbourne University and he also works part time as Accounts Assistant at 7-Eleven Stores Pty Ltd. Chanya is a year 10 student at Caulfield Grammar, Wheelers Hill campus. Her plan is to complete a commerce degree at Melbourne University.
Since we are very well established in Melbourne, we do not rely on hosting or guardianship students to support our life style. Rather, we have been hosting overseas students for over ten years and value a cultural mix within the family for our children to learn and share. We were overseas students ourselves and have experienced those first days in a strange country. To be able to share and pass on our experience to newcomers is a fantastic opportunity. As parents, we appreciate the feeling of worry and frustration of not being able to be with children when they need us most and at the same time, we recognise the importance of investing in their education.
Whether we are a guardian for your child or their host family, we do look after them in all aspects to the very best of our abilitiy. Essentially, having been living as well as raising our children in Australia, we are truly in a position to provide practical advice to overseas students who come to study in Australia.
Melbourne is ranked as the most livable city in the world so it is not just a high standard of education on offer here, but also the chance to live in a safe environment which for young students is really important. We live in Glen Waverley which is a suburb with a strong mix of both western and Asian living life styles and yet, it is one of the Melbourne suburbs with an extremely low crime rate which means peace of mind. We are also within easy access to public transport.
